But Better Wine Co spritzers are made by hydrating freshly pressed grapes with deep well water and spontaneously fermenting with native yeast (piquette-method).
2018 was a rainy year of historical proportions. Our farm in Westminster, Maryland received over 80 inches. The 30-year annual average is approximately half of that.
This made it really challenging to get fruit fully ripe. We farmed our best and decided rather than fight with nature, we would change our goals for the vintage in accordance with the conditions. This meant much, much less traditional red wine and much, much more piquette (low-abv wine spritzers).
The piquette method helped us bolster our production considerably in an otherwise financially challenging year. While we made a few limited releases of piquette under the Old Westminster label, we didn't want to veer too far away from our family's farm story. So we decided to create a new brand - Better Wine Co - and change the standard for low-abv spritzers forever.
